The Odayeri Power Plant, the Middle East Group’s Major Eco-Friendly Investment, Was Inaugurated with Prime Minister Erdoğan in Attendance

As part of a project carried out in collaboration with Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s İSTAÇ A.Ş., the “Odayeri Landfill Gas-to-Electricity Plant,” implemented by Ortadoğu Enerji—a subsidiary of Ortadoğu Group—was officially launched with a grand ceremony attended by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The facility holds the distinction of being the largest of its kind in Europe and the Middle East. The Middle East Group has raised the bar to new heights in renewable and eco-friendly energy investments. The Odayeri Waste-to-Energy Plant, inaugurated on April 26, 2009, in the Eyüp-Göktürk region, converts Istanbul’s waste into electricity, making a significant contribution to both the economy and the environment. A Historic Opening with High-Level Participation The opening ceremony of this massive facility by Ortadoğu Group—which has pioneered projects across various sectors from aviation to logistics, and from energy to healthcare—hosted a large-scale state protocol. The ceremony was attended by then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, along with Environment and Forestry Minister Veysel Eroğlu, State Minister Egemen Bağış, Istanbul Governor Muammer Güler, Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Kadir Topbaş, and executives from the Middle East Group. The Largest in Europe and the Middle East, One of the World’s Top 10 Facilities The facility, for which ISTAÇ A.Ş. held a tender in 2007 and which was constructed and commissioned by Ortadoğu Enerji, has gone down in history as the largest landfill gas (biogas) power plant in Europe and the Middle East in its field. Ranked among the top 10 similar facilities worldwide, the Odayeri plant stands out for the benefits it provides: Annual Electricity Production: 224 million kWh Number of Homes Powered: The annual energy needs of approximately 112,000 homes Capacity: A total waste storage capacity of 32 million tons on a 52-hectare site Erdoğan: “From Unregulated Landfills to Modern Energy Production” Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan highlighted how Istanbul’s former unregulated landfill sites have been transformed into a modern vision. Erdoğan emphasized the project’s vital role in Istanbul’s environmental transformation, stating, “Those who are familiar with the condition of the old Kemerburgaz landfill—which was once a wild dumping site—will fully appreciate the progress we have made today. Just imagine: we are now generating electricity at this very landfill using modern facilities.” With the Odayeri facility, Ortadoğu Group captures the hazardous methane gas emitted from waste before it is released into the atmosphere, thereby significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing a strong boost to Turkey’s domestic energy production.
